Solar Systems are generally thought to be “maintenance free” as compared to other electric or power generation systems. However, that does not mean that they are completely maintenance free.
While Solar Systems require little maintenance, the generation of the system could be severely hampered if they are left alone for a long time without preventative maintenance.
Here, we will discuss the maintenance of Solar PV Panels.
Solar PV Panel Maintenance:
- Dirt and Dust on the surface of the panels blocks sunlight and thus, reduced the efficiency of the panels. Simply washing the panels with water periodically is enough to clean them up. If stubborn grime is to be removed, cold water should be used along with a soft sponge to rub the surface. A metal brush should not be used. Detergents should not be used.
- A periodic visual inspection of the panels should be done to get for defects in the modules such as cracks, de-lamination, chips, leaks, discoloration, etc. Depending on the severity of the defect, it can be monitored for further deterioration or immediately attended to.
- The condition of the support structure on which the panels are mounted should also be monitored. Any rust, cracks, bending of the structure or the bolts securing the structure should be checked to ensure the stability of the structure.
